The old controversy: can an interpreter see more in the piece of art than the artist meant.
In my opinion, an interpreter can. Artists very often use their subconscious during their work and it is up to someone who studied the art/literary/film/any other theory to read the symbols and interpret them. That is why also psychoanalysis is now often employed to interpret pieces of art - this is what Zizek does with popculture, which is a great source of knowledge about the psyche of the society at the very moment.

Don't be the product, buy the product!
